Hearing this album, without knowing the background, might well have one puzzling over what wind instruments one was hearing. Pagans in Vegas has flickers of pleasure, but there's little joy or youthful uplift here. The Governess has the offbeat science-fiction atmospherics that Blur have mastered so completely on their comeback, delivering a strain of regret that becomes pronounced. It's the right backing for vocalist Emily Haines, whose obsession with the individual's lack of identity in the digital age now has songs that confront her fears while allowing for the joyous strut of Too Bad, So Sad. On the likes of Cascade and The Shade, Metric make muscular pop music, harking back to the atmospheric European endgame of early 1980s disco. Icy grooves and a coolly uneasy outlook suits them. Pursuing pop remains a sin in rock's credibility obsessed circles, but on the band's sixth album, the assured Pagans in Vegas, it sounds like a smart move. The Toronto quartet Metric have slowly but surely made the transition that infuriates alternative rock aficionados, abandoning sharpened guitars for increasingly sleek synthesisers. ![]()
